You can go higher than the cave!

A lot of people are getting to the cave/hole in the rock viewpoint and stopping. Look for the rope on the right hand side. It leads to an amazing 360 degree viewpoint which is much much better.

Note near the bottom of the climb you can take steps left or right. Left is to the temple and right is to the cave/rope viewpoint.

The rope part is quite dangerous, you need to be fit. Using arms to pull yourself up. Small kids and elderly - definitely not.

went in a tuk tuk to the base of the hill around 10am

Not the best time to go up compared to say 7am as the area is humid. We took the gentle path up and were rewarded with a nice vista of the surrounding area.Vegetation and limestone hills of the area are an extension of the Perlis landscape in Malaysia.Returned to Hatyai later in the day

The Mountain of Phathalung

Intended to view the mountain from a nearby restaurant but I was there quite late...sad indeed. Will come again to view this mountain..

Exquisite temple in a lovely setting.

From the attractive statuary and picnic spot at the roadside, take either of two staircases. Both lead to a platform after 10-15 minutes climb. From here you can choose to go to the right up stairs to the cave or left between two 3-headed nagas to a temple complex.
The stairs to the cave are a long hard slog (for us anyway!) with precious little reward other than an uninspiring view through a hole in the mountain and saying "we made it!" Forget this route if you have time for one only.
The temple is unmissable and definitely 5 star. Go up the stairs past the nagas and eventually past various statues including a magnificent purple Ganesh. Ultimately, you are confronted by the most beautiful temple in a gorgeous setting amongst trees. In front is a lovely, carefully tended garden with more sculptures. Inside were people doing walking meditation on a gleamingly immaculate floor. Beyond is a relaxation/picnic area whilst further still is a cave. You can go down the steps inside - there’s a light switch on the right inside the entrance - to pass impressive stalactites and reach more Buddhist images.
Before leaving the temple area, climb up the pagoda to see a great view out to the Thale Sap lake.
This is a truly great visit.
